Welcome to Animal Dynamics, Inc!

dr richWelcome to Animal Dynamics, Inc. Focused on improving communication, systems and practices in veterinary hospitals. No matter where you are right now, there is no ceiling to the level of performance you can attain.

Most client dissatisfaction is about the communication with the veterinarian or staff, rather than the actual medical care. In many cases, the breakdown in communication leads the client to suspect or allege negligence on the part of the doctor. Taking the time to evaluate and improve communication skills will improve clinical accuracy, client satisfaction, patient care and employee retention.

Dr Richard Bennett (formerly Spickard) brings over twenty years experience in small animal practice, emergency practice, animal chiropractic care and business management to help practices achieve a continuous upward spiral of self improvement. He holds a Credential in Veterinary Family Practice and is on the Board of Directors of  the Association of Veterinary Family Practice. (www.avfp.org) He is a founding member of the Academy of Veterinary Family Practice. The Academy is working toward creating a specialty in Veterinary Family Practice to address the trend of the ever larger percentage of veterinary graduates choosing to specialize. The Association and Academy are concerned this trend will lead to a significant decline in the number of Primary Care veterinarians.

Dr Bennett has testified as an Expert Witness, establishing the Minimum Standards of Practice working with the California Veterinary Medical Board. He is a mentor in the Doctoring Program at the Veterinary College at the University of California, Davis.  He has authored numerous articles on veterinary practice and communication.

From the veterinary dentist's mouth

More pet owners are aware of the importance of dental care for their cats and dogs. But some pet owners are opting for teeth cleanings by non veterinarians at pet stores or groomers instead of a thorough oral examination and cleaning by a veterinarian. Some people are using this option because they believe it is less expensive than going to a veterinarian, or they’re afraid to have their dogs put under anesthesia. So why should you insist on a veterinarian cleaning your pet’s teeth?

In this podcast, Dr Jan Bellows, a board-certified veterinary dentist with All Pets Dental in Westin, Fla., and president-elect of the American Veterinary Dental College, talks about proper dental care in pets.

Quantum Singularity of Medical Records

It hasn’t hit the mainstream media yet, but veterinarians across the state have discovered a quantum defect in the space-time continuum, that allows hours and hours of their hard labor to almost magically disappear. It’s a little known phenomenon called the Medical Record Quantum Singularity.

How you say? The old adage holds true, “if it isn’t written down, it didn’t happen.” As an example a medical record entry might be solely: “PE – WNL”. In our busy practices with a healthy “well pet” exam, we might be tempted to make such sparse notations. What isn’t recorded is any “data, including that obtained by instrumentation, from the physical exam” [CCR §2032.3 (a)(7)] which is required by law.

The Truth About Canine Care

NBC Bay Area reporter Vicky Nguyen recently aired a piece about Non-Anesthetic Teeth Cleaning. See the original story here.

Now, as licensed veterinarians, we KNOW that scraping the tartar off the visible tooth surface in an awake animal has three problems:

  1. It provides no health benefit (either treatment or prevention) whatsoever,
  2. It carries risk of significant injury (to the handler or patient-including death), and
  3. It damages the enamel surface of the tooth, accelerating plaque and tartar buildup.

Yet the owner of Canine Care, Inc, Cindy Collins continues to perform and teach others to conduct this practice on "thousands and thousands of animals every month" and claims that there have been "no problems" associated with this service. Of the two deaths out of 68,000 clients, well she dismisses those as not the fault of her hygienist. Unfortunately since she isn't a veterinarian, you have NO ONE to complain to when there are problems.
